There are built-in utilities and some third part tools mean for virtual machine backups.
Background
There are methods that are meant for block storage, file based storage and virtual machines. In this task we will focus on both traditional backups for files and virtual machine backups. While the solution could be used for both files and virtual machines, it’s not recommended for VMs to be backed up by file copying the virtual hard drive files.

It is recommended for this discussion you look into concepts for Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft Azure, VMWare’s VMs and other 3rd party applications for VM backup and replication. Look at snapshots, but realize that these may not be the best solution for backing up VMs and data.
