On Monday, we learned a little about the Lowell Mills Girls – the young women who became among the first wage workers in the new industrial economy of the early 19th century. They were also among the first to organize and protest wage cuts and poor working conditions.
We discussed briefly how the role of women began to change from being subservient to men and bound to the home. Women worked, and got some economic independence. Women began to take an active role in reform movements, such as the
Temperance Movement, and the Anti-Slavery Movement, which gave them a voice in public policy.
But they still couldn’t vote.
Many women were active in the early 19th century as workers and reformers, but two in particular took the lead Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.
